The word Punjabi is derived from Punjab. Punjab is a state or geographical region, which is surrounded by five rivers. From the name of these five rivers, this geographical area got its name Punjab. It literally means five + aab ie five rivers (five waters).Similarly, the people living in this region are called Punjabi and the dialect of this region is also called Punjabi. In other words, it means that the people living in Punjab are called Punjabi and the dialect or language spoken by them is called Punjabi language. Punjabi language is spoken in more than a hundred countries like India and Pakistan as well as neighboring countries like Canada, America, England, Australia, Germany, Singapore, Malaya, Sweden, Thailand, Afghanistan and Africa.

ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਤੋਂ ਬਣਿਆ ਹੈ। ਪੰਜਾਬ ਇੱਕ ਰਾਜ ਜਾਂ ਭੂਗੋਲਿਕ ਖੇਤਰ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਕਿ ਪੰਜ ਦਰਿਆਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਘੇਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਸਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ। ਇਹਨਾਂ ਪੰਜ ਦਰਿਆਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਭੂਗੋਲਿਕ ਖੇਤਰ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਪੈ ਗਿਆ। ਇਸ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਾਬਦਿਕ ਅਰਥ ਹੈ ਪੰਜ + ਆਬ ਯਾਨਿ ਕਿ ਪੰਜ ਦਰਿਆ (ਪੰਜ ਪਾਣੀ)।ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਇਸ ਖੇਤਰ ਦੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਖੇਤਰ ਦੀ ਬੋਲੀ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਦੂਜੇ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਜੇਕਰ ਦੱਸਣਾ ਹੋਵੇ ਤਾਂ, ਇਸ ਦਾ ਮਤਲਬ ਇਹ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਬੋਲੀ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਬੋਲੀ ਜਾਂ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਬੋਲੀ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਭਾਰਤ ਅਤੇ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ਼ ਲੱਗਦੇ ਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਨਾਲ ਕੈਨੇਡਾ, ਅਮਰੀਕਾ, ਇੰਗਲੈਂਡ, ਆਸਟਰੇਲੀਆ, ਜਰਮਨੀ, ਸਿੰਘਾਪੁਰ, ਮਲਾਇਆ, ਸਵੀਡਨ, ਥਾਈਲੈਂਡ, ਅਫਗਾਨਿਸਤਾਨ ਅਤੇ ਅਫਰੀਕਾ ਆਦਿ ਸੌ ਤੋਂ ਜਿਆਦਾ ਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਬੋਲੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ
ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਤਾਂ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਬੋਲੀ ਜਾਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਹੀ ਪਿਆ ਪਰ ਅੱਜ ਇਹ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਬੋਲੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਸਗੋਂ ਪੂਰੀ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਵੱਡੇ ਪੱਧਰ ਤੇ ਬੋਲੀ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਬਣ ਗਈ ਹੈ। ਪੂਰੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਬੋਲੀਆਂ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਭਾਸ਼ਾਵਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦਾ ਦਸਵਾਂ ਸਥਾਨ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ 110 ਮਿਲੀਅਨ (11 ਕਰੋੜ) ਤੋਂ ਵੀ ਜਿਆਦਾ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਬੋਲੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।ਬੋਲੇ ਜਾਣ ਦੇ ਪੱਖੋਂ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦਾ ਸਥਾਨ -
ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਜਿਆਦਾ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਬੋਲੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਮਤਲਬ ਬੋਲੇ ਜਾਣ ਦੇ ਪੱਖੋਂ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦਾ ਪਹਿਲਾ ਸਥਾਨ ਹੈ।ਭਾਰਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦਾ ਦਸਵਾਂ ਜਾਂ ਗਿਆਰ੍ਹਵਾਂ ਸਥਾਨ ਹੈ।
ਯੂ. ਕੇ. ਵਿੱਚ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦਾ ਤੀਜਾ ਅਤੇ ਚੌਥਾ ਸਥਾਨ ਹੈ।
ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦਾ ਤੀਜਾ ਅਤੇ ਚੌਥਾ ਸਥਾਨ ਹੈ।
ਆਸਟ੍ਰੇਲੀਆ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦਾ ਪੰਜਵਾਂ ਸਥਾਨ ਹੈ।

ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ੁੱਧ ਲਿਖਣ ਲਈ ਦੋ ਲਿਪੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ -- ਗੁਰਮੁਖੀ ਲਿਪੀ (ਭਾਰਤ)
- ਸ਼ਾਹਮੁਖੀ ਲਿਪੀ (ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ)
ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦਾ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ
ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਖੇਤਰ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਪਿਆ। ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਪੰਜ ਦਰਿਆਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਪੰਜ + ਆਬ ਜਾਂ ਫ਼ਾਰਸੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਪੰਜ ਦਰਿਆਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਪੰਜ ਦਰਿਆ ਹਨ - ਸਤਲੁਜ, ਬਿਆਸ, ਰਾਵੀ, ਜਿਹਲਮ ਅਤੇ ਚਨਾਬ।ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਭਾਰਤ - ਪਾਕਿ ਉਪ ਮਹਾਂਦੀਪ ਦੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਵੱਡੇ ਭੂ ਖੰਡ ਦੀ ਲੋਕ ਪ੍ਰਵਾਨ ਅਤੇ ਮੂਲ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਅੱਜ ਇਹ ਪੂਰੇ ਵਿਸ਼ਵ ਦੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਧਾਰਨ ਕਰਦੀ ਜਾ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ। ਪੁਰਾਣੀਆਂ ਭਾਸ਼ਾਵਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਹੌਲੀ ਹੌਲੀ ਕੁਝ ਬਦਲਾਅ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਤੇ ਦਸਵੀਂ ਗਿਆਰ੍ਹਵੀਂ ਸਦੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਹੋਇਆ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤੀ ਦੌਰ ਦੀ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦੀਆਂ ਵੰਨਗੀਆਂ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਗੋਰਖਨਾਥ, ਬਾਬਾ ਫ਼ਰੀਦ, ਸ਼ਾਹ ਹੁਸੈਨ, ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ, ਬੁੱਲੇ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਆਦਿ ਦੀਆਂ ਰਚਨਾਵਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਮਿਲਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਮਹਾਰਾਜਾ ਰਣਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਕਾਲ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਹੀ ਆਧੁਨਿਕ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦਾ ਸਰੂਪ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਟਕਸਾਲੀ ਵਜੋਂ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਦੇ ਪੱਖ ਤੋਂ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਇਕ ਆਰੀਆ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਇੰਡੋ ਆਰੀਅਨ ਮੂਲ ਦੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਆਰੀਆ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਸਿੰਧੀ, ਮਰਾਠੀ, ਬੰਗਾਲੀ ਆਦਿ ਭਾਸ਼ਾਵਾਂ ਸ਼ਾਮਿਲ ਹਨ। ਭਾਰਤੀ ਆਰੀਆ ਭਾਸ਼ਾਵਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਅਗਲਾ ਸਥਾਨ ਰੱਖਦੀ ਹੈ।Official Language
